Twizel to Lake Ohau Lodge, 38km of riding: Departing from Twizel enjoy the sealed road to Ohau Canal below Ben Ohau to join Lake Ohau. The cycle trail around the Lake is stunning and smooth. Be careful not to leave the trail as the local Matagouri is renowned for puncturing tyres! Head up to the side of Lake Ohau to the Lodge for the evening. Use the hot tubs to soak the muscles and relax at the bar before tasting the lodge’s high country dining.
Ohau to Omarama, 44km of riding: After breakfast, you will ride to the highest point of the trail, Tambrae Point. The gentle gradient gains you 350m higher and gives amazing vistas over the Mackenzie basin. The expression goes ‘What goes up must come down’, but please be careful with your speed as you whizz down to Quailburn. Once you are there a quiet gravel road and cycle trail take you to Omarama, halfway at 152km. Omarama Hot Tubs is the key to relaxing any sore muscles and is included in your tour. The new sailor’s cutting trail now takes you along the Ahuriri gorge and to the top of the Benmore dam. This section was opened in December 2020 and has turned into another trail highlight. This evening we have you booked for some wine tasting at Ostler Wines followed by dining at Wild Sage Cafe.
Kurow to Enfield, 65km of riding: Departing from Kurow toward Duntroon you get a few glances of the mighty Waitaki River. This part of the trail goes past the wetlands, an interesting community project that has rejuvenated the area.
