The Itinerary
Christchurch to Braemar, 35km of riding
|
Pick up from Christchurch/Queenstown around 7.30 am for the drive to Mt Cook. The journey can take up to 4 hours, we will stop for lunch in Twizel. After lunch we will drive you to the start at Mt Cook, we’ll get you on your bikes for a short ride to the airport, allowing you to test the bikes out before you fly by helicopter over to the remote part of the trail for the ride to Braemar station. Tonight, we will host you and prepare your food. |
Braemar to Twizel, 59km of riding:
Today you ride along the turquoise blue Lake Pukaki, following Lake Pukaki along a gravel cycle trail. Guided along by the Ben Ohau mountain range across the other side of the Lake, and heading away from Aoraki Mt Cook, stop to soak up the magnificence of this scenery and have a picnic lunch. Once you leave the lake, you head directly to Twizel across the Pukaki Flats, then ride sealed canal roads to the edge of Lake Ohau. Our evening meal will be at one of Twizel’s finest restaurants.
Twizel to Omarama, 64km of riding:
Continue on the flowing trail around Lake Ohau, stop at Lake Middleton for morning Tea, you then ride over the highest point of the trail, the gentle gradient gains you 350m in height and gives amazing vistas over the Mackenzie basin, after a fresh picnic lunch, cruise downhill through the golden fields to finish in Omarama. The Hot Tubs are the key to relaxing any sore muscles. Tonight we will eat at the local cafe.
Omarama to Kurow, 67km of riding:
From Omarama, the scenery changes and brings to light how the region and its water catchment were used for the Waitaki Hydro-Electric Scheme. Heading for your next stop at Kurow, you cycle past Lakes Benmore, Aviemore, and Waitaki. The trail varies from smooth shingles to sealed roads. The new sailor’s cutting trail now takes you along the Ahuriri gorge and to the top of the Benmore dam. This section was opened in December 2020 and has turned into another trail highlight. Tonight we finish in Kurow with wine tasting at a local winery & a fabulous dinner.
Kurow to Enfield, 67km of riding:
Departing from Kurow toward Duntroon, you get a few glances of the mighty Waitaki River. This part of the trail goes past the wetlands, an interesting community project that has rejuvenated the area. You exit into the small settlement of Duntroon and head on to quiet roads and cycle trails, passing Elephant Rocks, film locations, and through Rakis Tunnel. Your evening stop is at the old-school Enfield. The evening meal will be at the Enfield Tavern, an opportunity to meet some locals and experience some southern hospitality.
Enfield to Oamaru, 12km of riding:
Today, after your stay at The Old School, you ride the short section to Oamaru. Cycling through the town, you will see many Victorian buildings and get a feel for its history. Ride to the end of the trail at the harbour and celebrate the end of your journey at Scott’s Brewery for a celebratory lunch and beers are called for. You are free to explore the unique and special character of Oamaru for an hour before lunch, and you will then be shuttled back to your pick-up point.
